Nelsons Monument and the National Monument as viewed from the lounge window:
At the top of Nelson's Monument is a large white ball. This is hoisted up in readiness to be dropped at the same time that the 1.00pm gun goes off at the castle. They are electronically linked and it gives the illusion that the gun shoots down the ball. Apparently its original use was as a time marker for the seamen of Edinburgh’s ports. Quite fitting being at the top of Lord Nelson’s Monument.
Tip: If you plan to go to Edinburgh Castle try to get there to see the 1.00pm gun go off. It makes me jump every time.
